The AfD aims to achieve record results in the European elections on June 9th. To counter this, a nationwide wave of protests is planned just before the elections. Last weekend, 20,000 people demonstrated against right-wing extremism in cities like Erfurt, Essen, and others. Now, the protest is coming to Hamburg on Friday, June 7th.

The Alternative for Germany ( AfD for short ) is a right-wing populist and in parts right-wing extremist political party in Germany. After its founding in 2013, it ran for the first time in the 2013 federal election , where it narrowly failed to enter parliament . In the 2014 European elections, the AfD entered a supra-regional parliament for the first time. It subsequently entered all German state parliaments and, after the 2017 federal election, entered the 19th German Bundestag as the third strongest party with 12.6 percent of the vote .

Organizers are calling for a renewed wave of protests before the European elections on June 9th. This effort is seen as crucial, given the possibility that the AfD could still become the second strongest force despite numerous scandals in recent weeks.

The consequences of an AfD success could be far-reaching: the party aims to abolish the European Parliament, apply strict policies against refugees, revert to nuclear and coal energy, and reinstate borders within Europe.
