Amidst Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, millions of individuals have been compelled to flee their homes, seeking refuge in the European Union and neighboring countries. In response to this unprecedented humanitarian crisis, the EU activated the temporary protection directive in March 2022—a crucial emergency scheme designed to offer immediate and collective protection to displaced persons while alleviating pressure on the national asylum systems of EU countries.
Under the temporary protection scheme, refugees from Ukraine are granted essential rights, including a residence permit, access to the labor market and housing, medical assistance, and crucially, access to education for children. Currently, more than 4.2 million individuals from Ukraine are benefiting from this vital mechanism, serving as a lifeline amidst ongoing instability and displacement. Data up to November 2023 underscores the significant impact of these measures in providing essential support and assistance to those in need.
