Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, over 2.5 million Ukrainians have sought refuge in Europe, with Germany hosting a significant portion. Despite the challenges, efforts to support refugees remain ongoing, albeit with varying degrees of success.
Interviewer: Today, we have the privilege of speaking with Artem Starytskyi, a Ukrainian refugee who found shelter in Germany amidst the turmoil of war. Artem, thank you for joining us. Can you start by telling us a bit about yourself?
Artem: Certainly. My name is Artem Starytskyi, and I’m 30 years old. I hail from the eastern Ukrainian city of Bilowodsk, and I arrived in Germany on July 13, 2022.
Interviewer: Reflecting on your time in Germany, how would you describe German society?
Artem: Germans, to me, embody hard work, honesty, and adherence to rules. This commitment not only extends to legal frameworks but permeates daily life, fostering a sense of security.
Interviewer: If you could advise policymakers in Germany on refugee integration, what suggestions would you offer?
Artem: Thankfully, I haven’t faced significant obstacles in integration, but I believe continued support and streamlined processes are vital. Competent government officials have assisted me, and I hope this assistance remains consistent. Nevertheless, I remain vigilant and prepared for challenges.
Interviewer: What has been the most challenging aspect of your journey as a refugee?
Artem: Like many refugees, grappling with the realization of fleeing conflict zones has been emotionally taxing. It’s humbling to acknowledge one’s vulnerability and the necessity of seeking safety elsewhere.
Interviewer: Looking ahead, where do you envision yourself in German society in the next decade?
Artem: Ideally, I hope to have a family and make progress towards owning a home. My aspirations are simple – to lead a fulfilling life surrounded by loved ones.
