Paris – A total of 37 athletes from 15 nations are competing across 12 sports in Paris as part of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Refugee Olympic Team. This marks the third time the Refugee Olympic Team has participated in the Games, having been first introduced at Rio 2016.
The IOC Refugee Olympic Team represents more than 100 million forcibly displaced people worldwide. Made up of 37 athletes, hosted by 15 National Olympic Committees and competing across 12 sports.
The team, led by Masomah Ali Zada, who was a member of the Refugee Olympic Team in Tokyo, is the largest ever, with 37 athletes. Ten athletes were part of the squad in 2016, while 29 competed at Tokyo 2020.
The team Competing under the flag of the Olympic rings and with the Olympic Hymn as their anthem.
To be eligible for the team, which is selected by the IOC executive board, athletes must be refugees from a host country and elite competitors in their sport.
The Refugee Olympic Team’s participation in the Olympic Games is not only a testament to their resilience and excellence but also sends a powerful message of hope, belonging, and inclusion.
